The World Health Organization defines as "diabetic foot" the foot of a patient with diabetes mellitus when it presents complications such as: ulceration, tissue infection, peripheral neuropathy or diabetic arteropathy. "Diabetic foot" is the result of a mixed pathology.

How it is caused:

When peripheral diabetic neuropathy occurs, it results in the destruction of the nerves with consequent loss of pain sensation and consequent repeated and frequent injuries, infections and deformities of the fingers.

Ischemia of the foot (diabetic arteriopathy) results in low flow of oxygen and nutrients. The skin appears dry, pale, often pulseless and in many cases in adull and non-dull ulcers.

Diabetic foot: Symptoms

• His leg begins to become shiny, smooth.
• He has edema (swelling in the leg).
• The leg bruises or its hair falls out.
• Calluses form.
• He can't feel his legs.
• His legs have some stiffness.
• There is dry skin on the soles and backs of the feet.
• Nails show dystrophy and deformity (onychogryposis, onychocryptosis, onychomycosis)
• There is a change in the bones of the feet (hammer dactyly, gampsodactyly, big toe).
• There is an ulcer
• Change in leg color.
• His foot feels too hot or too cold.
